Visions of the Great Bird: The Thunderbird
Paintings by Tim Yearington
In Algonquin traditional knowledge the Thunderbird is the most powerful “manitou”, or spirit helper. Seen as being the biggest and largest bird of all, it is said to be so great it requires the entire universe to have enough room to freely fly around.
The Great Bird is the direct messenger of “Kitchi-Manitou”; The Great Spirit. As a messenger the Great Bird helps to bring change to people’s lives. When the Great Bird appears, it’s a big message that the Great Spirit is now present within us to give us the power to make necessary changes in our life for our own greater good.
When the Great Bird beats its big wings it creates the thunder. When it blinks its eyes it creates the lightning. When it comes from the west it brings a powerful thunderstorm and creates rain. The Great Bird teaches us about the “medicine” within ourselves. Thunder is our words. Lightning is our spirit. Rain is our tears. When a big storm in life passes we will soon see the rainbow.
